At noon there took place the first complete rehearsal of Act One, without the chorus, which needless to say was not ready and no one can tell me when it will be. Smallens accompanied and I conducted. It went well and the singers deserved all praise. The least good is Leander, who has a fine voice but is no use as an actor. He does not understand that Leander must look from the outside like a noble figure but inside is a scoundrel. Clarissa acts well but her voice is too high: she is a mezzo, and the part needs a contralto. I went in search of Coini to see whether there could be another Leander and Clarissa, but today is the first night of the season and Coini is in a state of complete hysteria.
