[Letter from Jemima Yorke to Mary Gregory, 29th October 1745] We -- went to the Play last Night, the Nonjuror, which has been revived upon this Occasion, & is a very proper Entertainment for the People to shew their Loyalty at. They do it I assure you very zealously by most thundering & frequent Claps, particularly at the Anthem of God Save the King which concluded the Play, with many Verses for the present time added to it, & performed by all the Actors upon the Stage, all the Singers belonging to the House with M.r Beard at their head, & join'd in by great Numbers of the audience very loudly, Encor'd, & ending at last with a loud & general Huzza. Indeed I never saw anything more solemn (considering the Occasion) nor more animating. These things are of great Use I am sure, & send People home ten times more eager to preserve the Blessings they enjoy. –– Me, I assure you, it had great effect upon, I never was more pleased & touched in my Life. |
