Shvarts was ill, and after the interval we played our Mendelssohn trio. We played well and were highly praised; people who had heard our final rehearsal were amazed because then we had been appallingly incoherent having had only three rehearsals; but now we were really concentrating, were not nervous at all, in full possession of our faculties so had no memory lapses, and in consequence gave a splendid performance. Straight away after the Mendelssohn we did Glinka's 'Doubt', also impeccably, but it is of course complete rubbish as music. This ended the programme, but suddenly up popped Glagoleva to play the pieces Shvarts was supposed to have contributed; they were not in any case very interesting pieces and the way she played them was uninspiring, so the net result for her was that she lost more than she gained from performing. |
