Went to our dirty, cramped and stuffy Mayor's office to put in an application for a foreign passport. From there went to the Conservatoire in order to be there for Umnenkaya*'s exam. Her father, brother and sisters were all sitting in the hall, visibly nervous and craning their necks every time a new student appeared on the stage. When Lidochka appeared, sparkling with diamond earrings, she looked magnificent. Her singing, however, was not on a par with her appearance, although she sung the wife's aria from Sadko not at all badly. The voice is good, although nerves make her sing sharp. |
