Ziloti did not come to the rehearsal today on the pretext of studying the Grieg Concerto. I was beside myself with rage because the piano was not there, likewise the attendant whose job it is to arrange the stands and seating. In a word, a shambles. As for the actual rehearsal, my reaction was mixed. In one sense it was beginning to come together, but it is still not there. My overriding feeling was one of tiredness, and I definitely risk putting too much strain on my heart whenever I get carried away, I risk doing it real damage soon. Today I had real difficulty getting my breath. Overall, although the players have learned their notes, there is no piano, no nuancing, and all too often the subsidiary material gets in the way of the main subject. If yesterday Tcherepnin emerged discontented from the rehearsal, today was my turn to be tired, dissatisfied and in a bad temper, even though Ziloti said it sounded splendid. |
