I attended a rehearsal of the roulette scene. At first I was not very happy: much of the singing seemed tentative, without much understanding of why a given phrase should be as it was or the reasons for it sounding harmonically 'wrong'. The result was stupid. But then matters righted themselves, things began to go better, and the end of the scene was being sung with gusto, some characters singing by heart. |
