In the early morning I remember floating into consciousness with the sound of my father Edmund Rubbra practising the Schubert B flat and Ravel trios. Ribbons of sound filtered up through the gaps of the floor boards. I have often used the image of the ribbon as a metaphor for a continuous forward movement in time. |
