A letter would arrive from my mother: ‘Barbirolli conducted the 6th like an angel in a concert at Oxford last night.’  A little later I wrote to my father, ‘I heard your 6th symphony on the radio.  Every time I hear the slow movement I weep with the beauty of it.  I am sure it is the most beautiful piece of music ever written.’
