In Act III the chorus watched me attentively, some of the girls grinning broadly when they saw the anger on my face. Act IV also went well; during the last interval I visited the buffet where I met Myaskovsky, who was full of praise for my rhythmic firmness, the way I was directing the chorus and the care I was taking not to drown them. Quite an encomium, coming from him! Hitherto he has never done anything but criticize my conducting, so I was most encouraged. |
