[On 16 January 1741, Richard Lacock was found guilty of theft and sentenced to transportation] Henry Gibson: I keep the Elephant and Castle in Fleet-Lane On the 10th of Dec. last, between five and six in the Evening, the Prisoner and one Wilson a Neighbour, came into my House, and called for Beer, and I served it them in this Tankard; after they had drank three Pints of Beer, it drew near 6 o'Clock, and I had a Birth Night Society to begin, so I persuaded him to stay, for as he came with a Neighbour, he would be very welcome. Accordingly he staid, and sung the Company several Songs, but half an Hour after 11 he went privately away, and the next Morning I missed the Tankard. […] Prisoner [Richard Laycock]. I know no more of this, than the Child that is unborn; I had paid my Reckoning, at 6 o'Clock and was coming away, but he entreated me to stay and sing the Company a Song[.] |
