My earliest memory is the possession of a penny trumpet, a tin instrument with a white porcelain mouthpiece, painted red and blue, which smelled and tasted tinny, but made a splendid noise. The trumpet was probably my sole birthday or Christmas present, given to me by my foster parents [Mr. and Mrs. Williams] in 1892 when in my third year. |
