After the rehearsal I hurried home, donned my tails and went to the Meshcherskys' box in the Mariinsky Theatre for the premiere of Meistersinger. This opera always overwhelms me with the beauty of its themes, even though Wagner's approach to composing opera as exemplified in this work is not to my taste, any more than is its great length. Andreyev was very good in the role of David. The Meshcherskys were very kind. Came home much moved by the opera and full of gratitude for the love this music inspires in me. |
