I can still vaguely remember [my] first composition, which might best be described as ‘exceedingly bad Chopin’.  This may seem curious, for whereas I had been able to hear in church some Bach, Handel and fragments of other appropriate composers, not so of the illustrious Pole, whose music, apart from the Funeral March, would hardly have been considered suitable for the House of God.
