The high point in our European summer of 1936 was seeing Show Boat six times in Oslo. The recent replay brought back each frame like yesterday. Helen Morgan is as moving as before, Paul Robeson;s mere presence is overwhelming (not least in Ol' Man River, one of the great songs ever, in shape, scope, inspiration, and also in Hammerstein's lyrics), while Irene Dunne remains silly throughout.
