We remained a whole day at Calais, walked about the pier and went in the evening to the play. It was amusing but not good. Loyal songs were sung, and a great many old peaceable-looking gentlemen and all the women were in raptures, but the soldiers gloomy and silent to a degree not to be mistaken. I have not seen a smile upon any French soldier’s face the whole way. |
