Tuesday 21 June saw the first rehearsals of On Spital Fields in Christ Church, Spitalfields, the building it was written for. The day began with the schools’ rehearsal with Chroma [Ensemble] and the [Royal Academy of Music] students. This was the first time that the pupils had heard the music on instruments rather than just piano. The schools and the musicians were joined in the afternoon by the soloists [soprano Mary Plazas and tenor Mark Wilde] and a small group of Adult Chorus members who would be performing some sections on stage with the children. The evening rehearsal put together the Adult Chorus and the Joyful Company of Singers sections with the ensemble. The choirs were situated in opposite galleries above the stage.

The premiere of On Spital Fields took place [on Wednesday 22 June] at 7.00pm to a packed house. The performance was electrifying and many audience members gave a standing ovation. The last two performances took place [afternoon and evening] on Thursday 23 June. […]
