In the evening we came to Patras, where our group thought to go ashore, but the rain came on so hard we had to forgo that pleasure. As a result of Alexeyev's and Babastro's insistence I had no choice but to play for them, on condition that it was kept a secret from the other passengers. I sensed that formerly they had not had an especially high opinion of me, but now they were extravagant in their astonishment and appreciation.
