Politics apart, the tour made me realise more than ever the magic properties of an art that knows no frontiers: of all the programmes I sent they chose the most classical, but I included Rawsthorne’s Four Romantic Pieces, and was touched to feel the audiences’ reaction to the changing moods of the music, though I could not have exchanged a word with more than a handful of them.
