I did find a moment to tell Madame Schwarzkopf that I heard her not only in The Rake's Progress in Venice at the world premiere in 1951, but a few seasons later in Paris when, with Igor Markevitch, she sang Florent Schmitt's Psalm in a gray satin gown with a vast gray fox collar. "I do hope you remember the music too," she replied, with that smile. I do remember the music, but it wasn't important.
