Schumann's Carnaval, orchestrated by a whole pléiade of Russian luminaries (Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov, Tcherepnin, Arensky), proved to have been rather tediously and unimaginatively staged. I had expected better, since this music offers such wide vistas for the imagination. It was interesting to hear how it had been orchestrated, although the more pianistic the number, the less successful it was in its orchestral guise. |
