On Sunday afternoons, in the early 'forties, some of the guys would get together at my house. [Thelonius] Monk, Dizzy [Gillespie], John Collins, Ben Webster, and others. We'd have little sessions listening to records. We'd listen to a lot of Hawk's [Coleman Hawkins'] records. He was making some in Europe that we'd get. And we'd play things of our own [… while] my wife would be in the kitchen cooking us something to eat. Then on Sunday nights we'd go to Lewisohn Stadium when the symphonic session was on.
