The first rehearsal of Autumnal. As usual with such occasions I derived little pleasure from it. Autumnal will not be a success with the public. It has too little surface appeal for that, and of course its depths will not be appreciated. Even so, for those who accuse me of grotesquery and a lack of lyricism and poetry, this piece will provide some evidence to the contrary. |
