[...] at nine o'clock I was back in Interlaken by the shore of Lake Brienz. Trains in Switzerland are not troubled by the incredible German mania for punctuality and are often late, but on the other hand they wait for one another. So it was on this occasion: the steamer waited for the arrival of our delayed train. Lake Brienz is longer, deeper and surrounded by higher mountains than Lake Thun. There is in fact some resemblance between the two, but it was difficult for me to compare them since I saw Thun at dusk while I was now seeing Brienz in the full glare of the morning sun. It being Sunday, a military band was playing on the deck of the steamer, there were a lot of passenger, and the voyage had a happy, holiday atmosphere. |
