We sailed from Manila to Hong Kong in a little American ship.  I remember this voyage well because it was the first time I had ever seen the sea go ‘oily’, turning into a flat sheet of colour.  The sky was entirely pink that evening, and the sea was pink too.  One of our pianists, Schura Chmelnitsky, played Debussy and the ship’s piano sounded like a concert grand.
