Finding that England was a much likelier ground for oratorio than opera, he arranged through Messrs. Novello for the performance of his attractive setting of Psalm xix, "The Heavens declare," which was duly performed (and very badly into the bargain) by the Sacred Harmonic Society at St. James's Hall in 1885. Two years later a much better rendering of the psalm was given at the Norwich Festival under Mr. Randegger.
