During the night my watch for some reason was two hours slow, so when  looked at it on first waking up I went back to sleep again until after eleven. When I realised my mistake I sat down in a panic to study Falstaff, so as to make at least some attempt to prepare the final scene for Tcherepnin. From two until four we went through it with him, and then from four to six the principal singers came for their first class on the opera. Everyone was there, Gabel, Palechek, Tcherepnin, all the conductors and many of the singers. Tcherepnin and I played through all three Falstaff scenes we were working on, Gabel becoming so absorbed in the music he sang along and banged with his palms on the lid of the piano.
