The piece [Chout] was an exceptional success among musicians. Ravel described it as a work of genius, Stravinsky as the single modern work he could listen to with pleasure. 'Les six'* spluttered with delight, although the appearance of Chout was a blow to them, representing something they ought to have done themselves but had not been able to.
