Dinner at the Biltmore with the Bohemians in honour of Bauer, a grand occasion. Linette - whom I had invited as my partner - and I were seated at the top table, which at first made her very uneasy. My Overture and Bassoon Scherzo sounded less than robust because of the size of the hall and the dreadful acoustic. They were well received, however, and I bowed my acknowledgement alhough I had expected much more enthusiasm than in fact they were accorded. Chernyavsky told me they had played the Overture on 22 March in Chicago and it had been an exceptional success. |
