I have got to a time of life when one feels the tragedy of "B A." [blighted attachment] more deeply […] Life holds so much less real affection and accomplished desire than one hopes when one is young. But B.A.’s have a terrible touch of the comic at times! Dot has bolted from a most unexpected swain in this neighbourhood who has broken loose with all the desperation that sometimes characterizes very shy people when they do turn the corner! […] All I can do is to listen to his Cantata! He (prematurely) composed one, words and music, which he advised himself to call "The Consummation of Bliss." The night before last I heard this all through! Since the fatal "No" he is composing one on Ariadne. If he sings as Bacchus I don't quite know how I shall bear it I!
