The orchestra played Scythian Suite very well, but the Concerto was not good at all. De Lamarter, who is here only temporarily and somewhat accidentally, is to put it plainly no sort of conductor, and to add to it did not know the score, so his ineffectual arm-waving produced a travesty of the piece. Although it is not done to discredit a conductor by making suggestions to him in front of the orchestra, De Lamarter can never have had any credit to lose anyhow, so I took charge of the rehearsal myself, leaving De Lamarter off to one side. I concentrated on getting the musicians to repeat unsatisfactory passages, giving them instructions and demonstrations on the piano of what was required, and after an hour things began to move forward.
