The piece [Dreams, op. 6] went smoothly. Once or twice I probably did not give decisive enough cues, and once or twice I heard the bassoons fudge their entries, but when during the applause I shook the leader's hand and turned to leave the stage I had the impression that the orchestra had played with a good deal of temperament. This impression has now faded, because so many people have told me that the orchestra was all over the place. |
