The Corporals and Lance Corporals of the upper camp gave a smoker [smoking concert] on St. Patricks's night and Corporal Maloney was at his best. Smokers are a common feature of camp life here.

Edward Roe was a professional soldier who enlisted in 1905. He served with the East Lancashire Regiment, went on the Active Reserve list in March 1914, and was recalled to active service on the outbreak of war in August 1914.
