My father had given clear instructions about his funeral [...] His only wish, if it was possible, was that the Second Movement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony should be played, the one with the slow, gentle lament like a funeral march. And so it happened, but I don't remember how it was arranged. It was in the Musikhalle, a large hall in the city which had escaped bombing.
