But as an artist Volodja [Vladimir Horowitz] was a master in presenting music in its unmistakable, true dimensions. He worked tenaciously, with meticulous care to every note, every phrase, until all was fitted into one integral form. His instinct was unerring, and his performance had a quality of spontaneity, as if it couldn’t be otherwise and had just happened without intention or previous labor.
