They were opening for David Essex, the British pop-rock singer who had scored a monster hit with his echo-laden, retro version of "Rock On." The place was packed, and we took up a spot at the bar, listening to The Persuasions' lovely old a cappella sounds. They charmed the audience for almost an hour[.]
