The conditions under which I began my musical education could not have been bettered. To the simple, submissively contented mode of life, the active cult of the most advanced musical tendencies displayed by the fine Court Orchestra–conducted by a man whose devotion to progress had won an exceptional reputation for it–provided a strange contrast.
