Alexander Mackenzie in Sondershausen - between the 1850's and the 1860's

from A Musician's Narrative , pages 29-30:

With three schoolfellows a quartet of violins was formed, for which the music had to be arranged by ourselves from operas and other sources; our practising being done in a small room behind the shop of the Hof-Konditor Krause, at whose son's instigation the wondrous combination came into existence. Although the noises produced may have been fearsome at times, the experience was of service.
