The joy of living in such beautiful surroundings was enhanced by the good nature of the Contadini. Working around me in the fields and vineyards while I wrote in a narrow tower, they would hush down their singing–sore deprivation–with a "Zitti! Il Maestro strive" (Keep quiet; the master is writing).
