Sylvia Townsend Warner in Maiden Newton - 10 August, 1957

from The diaries of Sylvia Townsend Warner, page 239:

In the evening I sat listening to Norma (on records) with Kallas [sic] & Stignani.  Kallas's fine-drawn pianissimo - like a fiddler's rather than a singer's.  I thought of first times - the time when Pasta waited to sing Casta Diva for the first time. These are indeed unique occasions.
