[Joe] told wonderful stories, in that lovely lilting Caribbean accent.  The one that lingers to this day concerned Dizzy Gillespie and the first time Joe played a concert with him.

'We played a couple of numbers and I thought, well, man, he's OK, but really he's just going through the motions.  And then Dizzy took off and all of a sudden he was right up there in the rafters and, man, we were just swallows on the water.'
