Richard Edgcumbe in England - between late 18th Century and early 19th Century
from Musical Reminiscences: Containing an Account of Italian Opera in England, From 1773. The Fourth Edition, Continued to the Present Time, and Including The Festival in Westminster Abbey., pages 148-9:
Of Mrs. Bates I am much better able to speak, having frequently met her in private society, and heard her sing repeatedly. Her voice was perhaps not so celestial as Mrs. Sheridan’s but was nevertheless one of the finest quality; full, rich, and commanding, of great compass, flexibility, and power.
