Igor Stravinksy in London

And performance can make the hundred percent difference between non-sense and comprehension, as it cannot do with a popular classic. Even in the case of so simple and accessible a piece as my own Symphonies of Wind Instruments, I ought not to have blamed the listeners who took it for an ugly duckling as its London debut (though I have launched an unsuitable metaphor; the work is no swan even when perfectly played): it was unintelligibly performed.
