Nicolai was a fair pianist, and I remember the New Year’s Eve of 1899-1900, which we spent with the Yelachiches in their house, and at which Nicolai accompanied my father in Schumann Lieder. What a happy night that was, and how momentous the dawn of 1900 seemed to us! I remember that we talked anti-English politics at the party, because of the Boer War.
