I was always surprised that a man of such reclusive habits could bring himself to appear on a stage. But he [Manuel de Falla] conducted and even played the harpsichord in his Concerto – a piece I admire and have conducted myself. In fact, the last time I saw him was at a performance of this Concerto in London in the 1930s.
