Though I have lapsed in the last decade – more because of laziness than of intellectual scruple – I still consider myself Russian Orthodoxist. Incidentally, I first heard Machaut’s Mass a year after mine was composed, and I was not influenced in mine by any ‘old’ music whatever, or guided by any example.
