Alan Plater - the 2000's
from Doggin' around, pages 162-163:
There is a surviving 1913 recording of the Fisk Jubilee Quartet, singing a spiritual called 'Roll Jordan Roll'. It is, in all honesty, a pretty somnolent piece of work, starting with a simple four-note phrase - doh-me-soh-doh - and continuing in that vein for a while before livening up with a counter-melody.
