Biches was followed by Les Noces, which I was hearing for the first time. This is the work of a master, with an intensity approaching that of The Rite of Spring. A marvellous work. I went to congratulate Stravinsky; we kissed, but when I voiced my criticism of Biches I was astonished to hear him leap to Poulenc's defence. I said: 'I simply can't believe you like it.'
