Wednesday, 7th. […] In the evening, to the King of Sweden’s box in the Sistine Chapel, to hear the ‘Miserere.’ There is a long service chauntecl before it begins. Charming as it is, it did not perhaps quite answer my expectations; because when one sets one’s imagination to work, one can always surpass anything that really exists. The scene around, too, is not imposing; it is small, and crowded with people, who are many of them moving about and making a noise.
