Mary Berry in Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi, Florence - 20 March, 1818

from Diary of Mary Berry, 20 March 1818, pages 156–157:

Went to the Church of Ste. Maria Madelena dei Pazzi, to hear the Passion sung; it lasted from noon till three o’clock, alternately singing and preaching. The music was tolerably fine, but the preaching detestable. Lenesino, an old singer, sang here, and at the Grand Duke’s Chapel, to which he belongs, having left the stage twenty years ago from religious scruples.
