In the same year [1840], a great disturbance occurred at the Trinity Baptist Chapel, Haslingden. My father went over one Sunday, and found the doors locked. The Rev. Mr. Starkey and his party came with big hammers and broke the doors down. Getting into the gallery, the minister was attempting to jump into the pulpit, but someone seized him and pulled off his coat laps. After that, Mr. Starkey climbed on to the yard wall, and there preached from the text “The Hounds after the Hare,” all the time the choir kept on singing for the space of an hour.
